Richard Shock left his job as a professional environmental consultant in 2005 to concentrate on his developing work as a wood turner. He works mostly with English native hardwoods but uses some imported woods, which often have exciting colours and figures.

The design of the individual pieces is inspired by the wood itself, sometimes enhanced by inlays chosen to complement the grain and colour of the wood. For finishes Richard uses either wax finishes or oils which are suitable for food. In addition to functional items such as bowls and platters, candlesticks and salad servers he makes purely sculptural pieces.
